Push the Boat Out is delighted to host this online poetry writing workshop, Words into Things: Writing Poems about Objects, with Beverley Bie Brahic.

Most of us have totem objects, and in this workshop we will try our hand at drawing them in words. After reading and discussing two or three example poems for inspiration, we’ll have a go at writing our own object poem. Time allowing, we’ll also consider how to add a bit of storytelling to our descriptions of those favourite objects.

Reading materials will be circulated before the workshop. Students are invited to have a favourite object or objects at hand.

Beverley Brahic’s fifth collection of poems, Apple Thieves, will be published by Carcanet in August 2024. Her second and third collections were Poetry Book Society Recommendations; White Sheets (CBeditions) was a 2013 Forward Prize for Best Collection finalist; her pamphlet, Catch and Release, won the 2019 Wigtown Book Festival Alistair Reid Prize. Beverley’s many translations include Guillaume Apollinaire: The Little Auto (CB editions), awarded the 2013 Scott Moncrieff Translation Prize and Francis Ponge: Unfinished Ode to Mud, a 2009 Popescu Translation Prize finalist. Beverley grew up in Vancouver, Canada, and now lives in France and the San Francisco Bay Area.
