Accent Award: Residency

curated by Jiaoyang Li

Sunday 6th November

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Red Lecture Theatre

Accent Society is dedicated to nurturing and supporting Chinese writers who write across languages and disciplines through teaching, consulting, and publishing. Their mission is to discover and cultivate underrepresented voices and daring artistic visions. Based in New York City, Accent Society was founded by Na Zhong and Jiaoyang Li in 2019.

In the late spring of 2021, sponsored by the British Council Connect Through the Culture Programme, Accent Society launched a five-month international online poetry residency program, in collaboration with Jenny Niven, the director of Push the Boat Out Festival. During the residency, Accent Society hosted multiple poetry workshops for more than 20 participating interdisciplinary artists, taught by the renowned Scottish poets Don Paterson, Jen Hadfield, and Sophie Collins. For Push the Boat Out, members of the residency programme have produced a compilation of 10 short films which reflect the talent, the extraordinary range and the huge diversity in the interests of the participating poets.
